Most of the major wetlands of mainland Southeast Asia are situated in the lower basins and deltas of the major rivers of the Irrawaddy, the Chao Phraya, the Mekong and the Red River. The most extensive wetlands of Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines are typically coastal mangrove swamps with their associated mudflats, and often freshwater and peat swamp forests which occur to the landward of the mangrove forest. Vast areas of mangrove forest and swamp forest are found in the remoter areas of Sumatra and Borneo, although they are now under great pressure from logging.
