Environmental Impacts of the Asia Tsunami
Welcome to the page dedicated to the discussion of the recent natural disaster -TSUNAMI and its impact on the environment, particularly the coastal vegetation - MANGROVES.
We at Global Environment Centre is doing a compilation of information on the linkage between mangroves and the tsunami. There have been quite a lot of news how mangrove have save lives of the tsunami victims. Some statements from Indian groups indicating that mangrove protection and planting protected significant areas from Tsunami damage – and that mangrove planting should be incorporated into rehabilitation strategies. While on the other hand, the advocates for shrimp aquaculture think that mangroves have no positive role in withstanding the tsunami.
Currently, we are in the process of collating information from previous work on mangroves in relation to tsunamis and storms (how and to what extend is mangrove a positive buffer to the effect of tsunami) and make it available to policy makers and the media. We welcome any organization/individual that would be interested to be involved and contribute. We have uploaded those news and articles that we have gathered so far at the bottom of this page, please feel free to downlaod them.
We have also created a forum for discussion on this issue. ( Go to tsunami forum )
Any information related to the past or recent tsunami event in Asia with regard to mangrove and environmental impacts is much appreciated. Please contact Mr. Faizal Parish ( fparish@genet.po.my ) or David Lee ( david@genet.po.my ) . Looking forward to hear from you all. Thanks. - David Lee
