Country profile

The Philippines formerly supported extensive mangrove forests, tidal mudflats and coastal swamps, but these have been severely degraded as a result of conversion to shrimp ponds and reclamation for agriculture. The country is rice in freshwater lakes, many of which are of volcanic origin. The largest lake in the Philippines is Laguna de Bay near Manila.
