Call for South East Asian Case Studies
Integrated Wetlands, Biodiversity and River Basin Management
As a contribution to the Ramsar-CBD River Basin Initiative (RBI), the Global Environment Centre (GEC) is preparing a guideline for South East Asian countries on "Integrating Wetlands, Biodiversity and River Basin Management". This will build on the Ramsar Handbook 4 on "Integrating wetland conservation and wise use into river basin management" . It will be produced in English and four Asian languages: Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malay. The project is funded by the ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (ARCBC).
The guidelines will include case studies from South East Asia and additional information on existing guidelines, useful publications and appropriate expert agencies in the region. The new versions of the handbook will be distributed free to all South East Asia countries in the format of books, CDs and as downloadable documents on the internet via the ARCBC website and the River Basin Initiative Portal.
GEC is calling for people to send copies of relevant existing or new case studies from the ASEAN region. Case studies should be related to integrated management of wetlands, biodiversity and river basin management and illustrate at least one of the following areas:
- Integrated river basin management
- Policy and legislation for integrated water resources management
- River basin management authority and institutional capacity
- Community participation and public awareness
- Assessment and enhancement of the role of wetlands in water management
- Minimising the impacts of land use and development projects on wetlands and their biodiversity
- Restoration of wetlands
- River restoration
- Water allocation to maintain wetlands
Summary of case studies with lessons learned, most relevant to the topics mentioned or best illustrating the guidelines will be selected to be included in the guideline itself. Full text of selected case studies will be included in the CD version and made available online.
Authors of the best five case studies will be invited to participate in a meeting to provide input to the overall guidelines. This meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in conjunction with a workshop on "River Restoration" between 14-17 January 2003. Travel cost and accommodation will be sponsored by GEC.
The existing Ramsar guidelines and case studies from the Ramsar Handbook 4 can be downloaded from the portal.
